Maus, FYI this is the F-35/F-22 forum. Navigate yourself around the site a bit and you'll see where to post accordingly. No probs..
As far as this newly re-negotiated 'fixed' contract goes though, we'll probably have to wait and see the details in the Feb2011 FY12 defense budget release, to better assess the actual contract in totality. |

| In a way this does pertain to the F-35 program. Although I just looked fast at the whole article, it doesn't mention anything about F-35 programs related to the aircraft or support of it. Since the Navy is purchasing these 124 aircraft in the very near future, how will this impact F-35 production and quantities for the Navy? I can understand replacing legacy Hornets and Prowlers but hope it doesn't cut back on the F-35 numbers at the same time. |

| The Navy has a vaccuum to fill between now and the F-35's introduction. |

It won't. |

only 43 millon dollars per aircraft?
F-35 LRIP 4 , 76 m per aircraft.
but someone said the 32 F-35s will cost 5 billons, nearly the same as 124 F/A-18E/F/G? |

$43 millon per aircraft sounds very cheap to me, as we are talking Block II + aircraft here as well |

Maybe this will help tie things together:

Still, this is only tangentially related to the F-35. The news is about the Super Hornet that only mentions the F-35... if this is included, we might as well open it up to every Golden Eagle or Eurofighter discussion in existence because those are also competitors to the F-35.
IMH, this is definitely borderline, especially since you titled it "F/A-18 News" and don't even mention the F-35 in your post...
Anyway, the low price is interesting more in terms of it being way, way below other 4.5th Gen fighters. What's the Eurofighter now? $110 million- or is that pounds?
Is the Super Hornet cheaper than the F-35? Yeah, duh. It's an older airplane designed with a huge emphasis on cost, with adequate but not stellar performance. |

That's flyaway cost for the Super Hornets. The F-35s aren't 4x as expensive, there's just other costs included in that $5B. |

That $43M is CFE only -- iow, it doesn't include engines, T-pods, EW suite etc. |
