| Sheesh, you must have bloody good eyes! I can't see anything on it but i'm guessing a SAM sites no escape zone or a radars range. Is there anyway you could screenshot it and highlight it for the partially sighted folk like me? |

I would guess that you are right on. It is probably a missile range indicator. Realize that the entire sim is unclassified so I wouldn't go around making global capability guesses based on it. It could be as accurate as Falcon 4.0 or as inaccurate as a PS3 game.
The other possibility is a sensor coverage area. i.e. what the radar is set to report on (not what it can see per se but a defined area the jet is focusing on) |

| Looks like a HSD -looking at the pic at 0.42 the way it it shown as emanating from the jet you would guess its sensor coverage - and maybe the two straight lines coming from the nose are the current azimuth coverage of the radar. |

| I asked the same question when I sat through the sim, the answer I got was that it was the area that was available for SAR mapping by the APG-81. As you changed altitudes and orientation, the "egg" changed shape on the fly. Neat stuff... |

That makes sense and you can actually see the SAR image on the right side of the display. IIRC the APG-73 showed some kind of square on a RBM which could be moved over a position to zoom in with DBS or SAR.
For CAS missions and also others it's quite useful. Just move the cursor over a target transmitted via DL or received via RWR/ESM and you have the SAR image on a separate window! Quite useful feature if you ask me. |

my next question was going to be, "anyone wanna guess what the scale of the concentric circles are?" |

I am sure it scales, but based on this video (at 1:31):

20/40/60/80 nm |

yes therse are called rabbit ears, it's the area where SAR map is best quality. SAR map can be taken pretty much anywhere but it's best to keep in the ears during mapping. |

| By that display, the SAR can map past 80nm! |

| If it is in fact 80 nm scale yes, the question is what resolutions will be achieved at such ranges. |
