It may have a lower G rating than the A variant, but isn't the F=35C the most maneuverable variant due to its larger wing. Is this correct?
I think the C variant will be better in AoA fight against other variants, other than that the A version is probably the most manerverable. |

Read what I wrote - don't twist it!
I never said everyone were idiots. It is those who considered the Russian aircraft industry and there scientists and engineers etc. were finished and far behind and those who continually infer the Russians [are idiots] that annoy me. Time and again over the last 70 years they have proved otherwise starting in WW2. It was that sort of thinking that prevailed when the F-35 was conceived. "It will be 20-30 years before the Russians or anybody can come up with anything better or equal to the F-35 concept. It will take the Chinese 40 years if ever." They made a big mistake. [Those who thought this and continue to think this are the real Idiots?] Thats why we ended up with the concept - one good all-round stealth multirole Fighter, Bomb Truck, Naval Version, Ground Support and VTOL all based on basically the same airframe will be good enough to match anyting those 'idiots" can afford to come up with for 20-30 years. It now appears the F-35 builders have almost achieved this very difficult task except the B version which is delayed. [A great achievement .] The question now is - will it be good enough in light of other aircraft available or soon to be available ? The Indians obviously think the 4++ Russian and now Pak -Fa is the best way to go. They have waited many years before committing and obviously don't want the F-35. They have been offered everything except the Raptor. The Chinese are now obviously determined to develop there own aircraft. How far away they are from a true 5th Gen is hard to know but they must not be under-estimated either. [Thought of as idiots.] Maybe the Russians will not sell the the T-50 to them? India would not like that. I am Australian - the F-35 is not the ideal plane for us but there is nothing else remotely suitable so we take the F-35. On paper a mix of Russian SU-34 and SU35 or T-50 look ideal for us. If we are ever threatened that is probably what we will be up against but we need to have something in common with our main ally - the USA. [Big Brother]. I admire European aircraft but they are not really suited for a large country like Australia. A mixture of European Fighter and our Super Hornets maybe but none of them approach 5Gen. The simple fact is the F-35 will do just about anything but will it do it well enough when we look at what it will be up against in the next 20 years. First of all we have to get the thing - that is proving a long drawn out saga. In my mind the only real idiots are those who came up with the F-35 concept based on the assumption others were idiots. |

And who the heck ever said that? You have an remarkably overactive imagination. |

i agree with what you say. i to am an aussie and a mix of sukhois would most certainly give us air superiority in the region, but we need to have commonlality with the usa. but then i think that the we should probably instead of the f-35 ask for the f-22 (eveb though i hate that plane with a passion) as this is the most logical solution. and i mean, really, what are we going to do thats bad with the f-22? we're one of the usas closest allies. |

Being an American, I can't really say I know what Australia seeks for their air force. Could you enlighten me a bit?
If threatened, the need for an effective air superiority fighter like the F-22 makes sense when you're expecting to be confronted by high-performance fighters. But given its limited attack capabilities and high costs, you would also have to supplement that limited number of F-22's with something like F-18 Superhornets or the F-35. The F-35 seems to be the next best thing for air superiority, but I'm skeptical of how it would fare against F-22 wannabes like the T-50.
What the F-35 does provide is an effective stealth aircraft with all the electronic goodies of the F-22 + range at a somewhat lower upkeep cost. How significant is performance in all this? Or are there other things I have to consider? |

The C has the best wing for low speed flight and cruise because it has the highest aspect ratio. Its lift should rise faster with angle of attack than the A/B wing and it has less induced drag.
However, the wing makes the C heavier (along with other things), adds to drag area, and probably performs worse in the high transonic region. The A is probably the most agile overall given its weight and theoretically "balanced" performance relative to speed.

It’s not that Australia would do anything bad, it’s that keeping all the F-22’s in the US makes it a lot easier for the US to keep track of the technology. Imagine an Iran situation in Australia (yes, it’s unlikely, but just for example). All the F-22’s they would have had would not be in enemy hands either for use against the US or to be sold, compromising the technology. By banning exports completely, the chances of such a thing happening become extremely low.
Also, the more wide spread the F-22, the more likely it is to see combat. With that comes the chance of being shot down and/or captured. Right now, the US can decide exactly where all Raptors will be at all times. They wouldn’t be able to do that if other nations had the plane. |
