Hello all,

I was recently assigned to Cannon AFB and will be arriving there over the next 6 months. I was just wondering if people who have been stationed there can share their opinion on the place. (On base and off) How far is it to the scenic part of New Mexico, how often do they deploy, etc.

Thanks

I drove through there on my way to an equally lush base (Mt. Home). What I saw there was not all that bad, the town is moderatly sized (40 thousand), and the base is surrounded by farms, cow farms. As far as how often they deploy, that will have to be answered by a veteran.

I was at Cannon from 98-01, We deployed quite a bit, but I am a Fuels guy, so we were gone more since we had to support all 3 squadrons. I am not sure what the tempo is like now though.

I was there in a different era! 1974-1977, so I know things have changed. The Town has gotten bigger, the base has gotten better and they have these little planes there not the Aardvarks! So everything has gotten better! LOL!

It's a great town that supports the base as well as any town. Some nice Church communities if you partake in that. Very Good Schools. Affordable off base housing.

And it's FLAT_________________ There are some beautiful parts of New Mexico, but Clovis is not one of them. Heading just north you come off the plateau and there are some nice hiking trails there. To the South West and the Northern parts of New Mexico you have some great Mountains to hike and camp in.

All in all, I had an enjoyable time there for a year before I got married, and after I brought my wife from NY there, she enjoyed herself too. "IF" we had stayed in the USAF, I would have liked to have rotated back there.

Hope that helps!

I was there from Feb 03- Nov 04. It is a boring area and there isn't a whole lot to do, but it is all what you make of it. Towards the end, I honestly didn't mind the place that much. I was always kept on my toes and there is plenty of work out there. The base is like an experiment base to the AF. They try new things at Cannon that they will not do anywhere else. Also, we won lots of awards in the MXG, so everyone expects so much out of maintainers. You will experience it alll for yourself. The people are good there too. Facilities are decent (way better than here in Osan). Good Luck!

I was there from Feb 96 - May [Link pending approval] Hated it at first but the place kind of grows on you. The people in the 522fs were the best group of people I have ever worked with. We had our share of trips to the sandbox and even got to participate in Desert Fox in 98 dropping bombs on Iraq. Everyone is in the same boat there making the best of a not so awesome location. Certainly I would have rather been at Luke, but it sure was nice deploying to Nellis as much as we did!!

Well there is a walmart in [Link pending approval] [Link pending approval]'s about [Link pending approval] a walmart. There is really nothing to do in [Link pending approval] real city is lubbock,TX (about [Link pending approval] hours away). Depending on which AMU you go to will greatly determine how much you like the base. 524 or 522 will make you happy. Hopefully cannon will be on the BRAC and will stay on it. Get on the housing list as soon as you can. The houses that are actually ON the base are pretty bad but there is military housing right off the base (less then 1 mile) that is pretty decent.

I was there from 87-90, 91-00. I'm from a smaller town, so the size didn't bother me. We went on many a TDY, Team Spirit, Nellis(16 times), England, Saudi, Turkey, etc. The only thing I complained about was that for the occasional trip to the "big" city was a minimum of 1 1/2 hour drive if you drove the speed limit. Laughing I've been at Luke since Jan 2000, and to be honest, sometimes I'd rather be back at CAFB. Too many (stupid)people, heat. Basically, big cities aren't for me. Cannon is no gleaming jewel, but neither is it the steaming pile of cow sh*t you've heard about. It has it's fair share of stupid stuff going on, but what place doesn't.

I was stationed at CAFB from Aug 01 till Apr 05. I'm glad I finally left, but I made alot of good friends and learned a whole lot. I was in the 524 and deployed to kuwait for OSW/OIF. "Shock and Awe" baby!!! We usually spent about 2-3 months a year TDY at Nellis. The deployment rotation isn't too bad, but our TDY schedule was hectic during the spring and summer. I usually lived out of a suitcase from Feb till Aug every year... Oh and there is a Chili's now, so Wal-Mart isn't the only fun in town anymore. Hope you like wind....

That's what I'm saying! I'm starting to get tired of this whole DNIF thing! At least I can still fly the sim. By the way, how do you have the time to be on at all times of day?!

Nice, greasy fast computer in the medic quarters....SUPPOSEDLY for run records and 'net access for "informational purposes". Hell, they won't let me nap 'till 1300....might as well look up "information"......nobody ever specified what KIND of information.
