I apologize if this has already been done. I am not 100% sure, but I decided to post this anyway. After mulling through the F-35 discussions, I decided that the plane just needed a thread that involved no politics or bashing.

It is what it is. The F-35 is here. There are things about it that I do not like and in a sense, it truly is the Joint Compromise Fighter (JCF), but there are things about it that I really like. So, what is your favorite variant? Which one is the coolest to you? Please specify. For me it is a toss-up between the A model and the B model. The C variant is a dark horse to me. The A model is really starting to shape up as a worthy replacement/successor to the F-16 and that is saying A LOT!!!

* I like the A model the best for its looks, but I like the B model for its incredible ability for STOVL operations.

So, what say you?

As an anchor clankor, I have that "AF-xx Thunderbird" as background for my desktop. BF-01 in STOVL is incredibly awesome. But, I bet on darkhorses. There is something about those big wings and the heavy struts that makes me think that this may prove to be a worthy successor to the "Bug". Two Cents

Good topic!

A model for me, followed by the C and then lastly the B.

Got to agree with what you say about the A model looking to be a worthy replacement/successor to the F-16 too.

I know it's the common choice, but watching the B model go all Transformers on a STOVL approach just makes me smile.

Yeah, watching the F-35B unfold is just too cool. I'm also surprised at how good the C looks, thought that wing would ruin it, but it works.

F-35B seems like the best one. It can land almost any where, a good enough range, pay load, etc. While the runways are being attack be the enemy and leaving all other planes stuck on the ground. The B can still take to the skies to push back the enemy.

F-35A for me.

Smallest and lightest, most likely the fastest and with the smallest frontal RCS. Its the deadliest with the built in cannon.

Prinz, I agree with you 100%. I was thinking almost the exact same thing as you were regarding the C variant, but was surprised how good it looked in the air. It looked tough and sharp to me.

The B variant is simply unprecendented. Stealth, sensors, supersonic and STOVL with the ability to land on a helicopter pad if need be.

The sensors (mission systems) are INSANE on all variants. If and when they have a requirement and the technology is there to install a 100,000 Watt+ solid state laser onto the A model, we have reached Star Wars technology. Now all we need to do is to get away from fossil fuel burning, fuel-guzzling jet engines; a discussion for another time:)

The A Model, as an Air Force Crew Chief its the only one I care about. Don't get me wrong; it's an impressive bird all around and the sight of the B going STOVL makes my day, but CTOL is all I care about.

I definitely agree with the -35C, however your post left me with a uestion. What is the AF-xx to which you refer. I've caught a few mentions of it before, but never found out what it is.

I love the "C" variant. It's made to smash bad guys in ground and to hunt boogies near the Navy fleet. Also with it's big wins looks like the Raptor in some angles and I guess it will be the more maneuverable of all.

I like the F-35B, it's STOVL capabilities are awesome but I don't like the small wings. I perfer the F-35A for it's looks.

Just from looks the C. But generally the A, it's the least compromised version and is subsequently going to offer the best performance.
