LTC Joseph W. Hely, USA (Ret.), 84, died on Saturday, May 22, 2010, at his home in San Antonio. He was born February 21, 1926, in St. Louis, MO, to John Power Hely III and Laura Williams Hely, although his mother's family had lived in Texas before, during, and after the Republic. LTC Hely entered the U.S. Army in 1943 and fought in Germany as an Infantry lieutenant in the 90th Division, Patton's Third Army, earning the Combat Infantry Badge. He became a pioneer in Army Aviation. In the Korean conflict, he was one of the first four air ambulance pilots ever deployed in wartime; he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star for valor and the Purple Heart. He finished his warfighting with a tour in the Vietnam War. He then served a full career with McDonald Douglas Corporation, mostly with the Harpoon cruise missile system. He was preceded in death by his parents and his four siblings: John Power Hely IV, Mary Jane Hely Landolt, Robert E. Hely, and Richard F. Hely. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Alice Engler Hely; daughter Marilyn Hely Tomasello and her husband Jim Tomasello; son Joe Hely and wife Cornelia (Nell) Herff Hely and her sons Robert and Chase Turnbull, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The Army Medical Corps Museum has requested Hely's memorabilia. His son said it will receive a box full of photos and personal records.
