...and completely useless against a conventional enemy. There's a reason those flying snowmobiles didn't see combat in Libya until a month after OUP began. As for the B-1R, I'd love to see these operating in conjunction with the F-22A in its 'mini-AWACS' role. You then have the ability to take down a numerically superior enemy (North Korea, PLAAF/PLANAF) with only a few dozen of your own aircraft.

B-1 over Afghanistan loses navigation equipment and has to be 'rescued' by a C-17 and guided back to it's base.

Now, I know the modern day nav equipment is reliable and incredibly accurate, but shouldn't the navigator on a long range bomber be able to use a chart, compass and sextant and know how to DR their way out of the theater to the point where other ground controllers could steer them back to base? Do they not teach these skills anymore?

I figured a modern NAV system would be made up of several components other than just GPS for navigation. I know on the aircraft I worked on it all fed into the EGIs (INUs), but I guess if you lose power to those you are screwed.
