If these A2A capabilities are as advertised, think of the possibilities with A2G targets. Not hard kills but a soft kill, that could take out a vehicle(Command & control, IED, SAM, etc?) without destruction & collateral damage. What about defeating A2A missiles?
Detection, tactical, attack ranges would vary, and the AESA would become even more powerful the closer the engagement. Could the AESA actually fry electronics in a WVR fight? If electronic attack progresses to the point where we do not need kinetic kill weapons, think of the preformance benefits, (no internal weapons bay, extra room for fuel, no external weapons, less drag, etc.) this technology has far reaching possibilities for legacy as well as 5TH gen AC.
(And yes, I know you will still need kinetic weapons for certain mission)
Look at what the Isrealis accomplished with legacy AC, when they attacked the Syrian installation with EW attack and deception methods. Couple the EW attack with stealth and you have a 1,2 punch, extremely hard to defend against. |
