I didn't know if maybe he was saying that the F-111's sheer speed would enable it to engage at its own will, but aside from AIM-9, I didn't think the F-111 had any Air to Air capability. Thanks for confirming that I hadn't lost my mind.

Seems logical to assume that he meant the F-111 has the ability to engage or disengage in its "Mission", due to its speed and fuel, rather than "engage" a fighter..

This seems reasonable. The F-111 could go very fast for a long time and was hard to engage air-to-air, if he wanted to run. If he tried to fight a modern fighter, that was a different story. BTW, I am not aware that any F-111 had any compatibility with AIM-7. What would be the point?

I was told by an F-15E pilot that the F/A-18 could be a real monster due to its high AoA abilities, but it lacks the thrust to maintain energy through the maneuvers like the SU-27 does.

Interesting insight, FDiron. I guess few, if any, would not like to know of all the improved abilities at various altitudes generated from an upgraded-F414 powered Super.
