This really is sounding like something out of Battletech, but it is, at its heart, an interesting concept. If you look at the space required for an internal gun's ammunition (hint: It's pretty huge!!) and replace this with some kind of vertically-stacked Stinger/Starstreak bays, the space and weight saved could conceivably add physical space that could be used for avionics, fuel, or even additional missile ammunition.
To say nothing of the potential utility of a dual-role seeker, or rear-firing missiles... |

Well, I was half thinking that you could fit some vertically oriented launch tubes in the F-35A or C where the lift fan is for the -B.
Though having them tucked away in distributed locations around the aircraft and pointing in all directions also has interesting possibilities. There really is no reason they would have to be grouped together. |
