Apparently silent-ish helicopters have been invented! The new blade design apparently cuts the noise that the rotor blades make by quite a bit.

Perhaps "stealthy" helicopters will be joining the F-22 and F-35 in the future!

Yep, it's called the RAH-66; and it's already been cancelled.

Yeah, but before Eurocopter and Comanche, we had Blue Thunder and "whisper mode."

How quiet were the comanche rotors? That 3-4 decibel decrease of the eurocopters seems very significant! I live nearby a large hospital(Strong hospital. U of R) And a nearby army reserve base. The Chinooks fly over and shake my whole apartment, but when the newer mercy flight chopper flies over, its incredibly quiet! I cant imagine these rotors on a chinook...

On licenses alone this kind of technology could make EADS a lot of money.

This looks like a game changer for helicopters. That is, if the Blue Edge is all it's cracked up to be.

The Comanche only radiates one-half the rotor noise of current helicopters. Noise is reduced by use of a five-bladed rotor, pioneered by the successful Boeing (McDonnell Douglas) MD-500 Defender series of light utility helicopters. The fantail eliminates interaction between main rotor and tail rotor wakes. The advanced rotor design permits operation at low speed, allowing the Comanche to sneak 40% closer to a target than an Apache, without being detected by an acoustical system.

The swept tips of the Blackhawk series chopper also help to reduce noise.

Anyone know if the Blue Edge blades have the same ballistic tolerance as normal blades?
