Lets just say our jets were ready to carry out The President's order that morning when they took off at 10:17AM........ Good thing all the hijacked aircraft were down by 10:10. Would have been a very terrible thing for a Viper Pilot to do.
Even though there is speculation/rumor that our jets may have downed a hijacked jet, the times just don't jive. I can verify that.

To bad our local media couldn't get a picture of our aircraft for their article!?
Should have seen what happend at Wright-Patt. Some of the Springfield Guard F-16's were scrambled to escort Air Force 1. My folks life 4 miles from the airfield, and saw F-16's climbing at Full Burner well above the speed of sound. |

How do they or you know if they were above the speed of sound? Did they hear a sonic boom. Or were they hearing the roar of the engines? |

My dad has heard many a Sonic Boom in his 20 years in the Airforce, especially when we were at Patrick in the 80's.
He heard them, it wasnt a roar. Im suprised the City of Fairborn didnt try and get money for it, every time the Marines use Dayton for Urban excercises all Fairborn does is try and milk money out of the federal government for the "disruption to local populas" or some crap like that. |

After Sep 11, 2001, one of our aircraft with a new -229 installation had to do an FCF. During the FCF a supersonic run is required. The run was made high over Lake Erie.
The resulting boom was reported to numerous 911s in the lakeshore conties as being a "large explosion", to a "distant explosion" The next day may papers ran an article detailing our unit was "testing new engines" and that the booms may be heard on occasion for a few months to come.
Prior to Sep 11, all anyone did was call the FAA and [Link pending approval] |

I was wondering, which "Fox" call is used for which weapon?
In combat the call "Fox" is to alert you buddies that there will be a missile in the air. If they are trying to kill the same target you are then wait and see the results or, fire and have multiple missiles trying to kill the same target.- "Fox 1" -You are firing a Sidewinder Missile
- "Fox 2" -You are firing a Sparrow Missile
- "Fox 3" -You are firing a "ARH" missile (a Slammer or a Phoenix)
No call for using you guns for nobody "should" have to worry about being in the way or firing on the same target.

Swap the weapons on the F1 and F2, and you got it right.

In actual combat that's probably true (why the fight was allowed to degrade to a guns shot is for another discussion) but for DACT or war gaming the "guns" call along with pertinant target info is usually made when taking a guns shot on the OPFOR or Red Air element. Ex: "Guns kill on the Hornet nose down 23K heading 180".
And Gus is right about the swap. |

I live about 5 miles out of Fairborne, south of Dayton. I remember 9/11 and I remember the fighters being scrambled. It was all over the news. Its wierd though because im trying to recall details on how I knew this stuff was happening but I cant remember. It was my 2nd year of highschool I think...
