Something I've been curious about for a while,

Is the harness on the 16 tightened like on a race car at all times to give the pilot the confidence to do zero/negative-G maneuvers and such forth, or is left loose to give them better rearward visibility and freedom of movement, and then tightened manually for emergencies or combat maneuvers?

Or is there some sort of automatic tightening system like on a modern street car when the jet goes zero/negative, or inverts?

And how does it work on other planes? And older planes, like WWII era fighters, etc.

All I remember about this is that there is a manual lock for the shoulder harness (risers) on the left side of the seat:

It is just like a car seatbelt. Momentum dictates freedom of movement. I would check it before each flight to test it. And yes, there is a manual lock system as well.

Oh, so it locks up when it gets pulled on quickly? Neat.
