Gents,

I was talking with my best friend earlier in the week while we were watching a F-15 video. Talking about the engines, I wondered what are the differences between our Belgian Air Component F-16s engine (PW-220E) and those installed in F-15E (PW-229E if I am correct) ?

Thanks,
Gab'

pw229 generates 3000~4000 lb of thrust highter than pw220

FYI - The -220E is just a -100 or -200 that has been modified with a 'kit' to make it into a -220 "equivalent" (Where the 'E' comes from) There are -229A and -229B (F-15/F-16 configurations) and -220A/B/C/D/E (other minor differences) but they're all simply -220 or -229 when it comes to performance. There is the PW-229EEP (just entering service) but that is a longer life engine, not an increased performance engine.

Edit: The PW-229 is also used in F-16C/D Block 52/52+ and ANG assigned Block 42s. (not just the F-15E)

What does the F100-PW-229 have that the F100-PW-220 doesn't? Shrug

1. Increased airflow
2. Increased size core / lower fan bypass ratio
3. Increased pressure ratio in both fan and core compressors (N1 & N2 are more efficient)
4. Increased fan turbine inlet temperature
5. Increased efficiency augmentor
6. Decreased spool-times (Accelerates fastest of any fighter engine from IDLE to MAX thrust)

How's that for a 'top 6' list of improvements/changes?

All of which resulted in about 24% increase in MIL thrust, and a 20% increase in MAX thrust.

Keep 'em flyin' Thumb
TEG
