I'm guessing you are guessing way too low.

We've answered the topic many times over, but it seems the "what if you.. ____" keeps coming up.

Being a mechanic yourself you should realize you can't just 'put a better part' in one place and expect all the 'stock' parts to hold up the same; something is bound to give. If you put faster tires on your car, the ignition may not keep up; improve the ignition and the water-pump mail fail; improve the water pump and the radiator may fail... etc.

We can all "what if" all night long.

What if money were no object? We'd have F-12E "Blackbirds" flying around the skies at MACH 3.5 and 80K feet with AESA radars and AIM-54G Phoenix missiles in the bays, all working together in a hive with their high-speed data-links up-linked to an EC-767 AWACS with AESA. all refueled from KC-767 tankers; perhaps they could be augmented by FB-1Cs with their super-cruising F119 motors, carrying dozens of AIM-54Gs and AIM-120 ERs or AIM-152/155s! (This is in addition to the 850 "new" Raptors that are stealthy but not near as adept at intercepting A/A targets at stand-off ranges.)

Nobody would get a fighter through that! Twisted Evil

Keep 'em flyin' Thumb

So it looks like with your typical F-15 your only going to be able to fly at Mach 2.5 for five minutes at best, and your engines are going to need an overhaul. Although if your not looking to actually land the plane safely, you could probably fly at that speed for a bit longer.

I have a few questions however. Could this be done with any weapons load, say four AIM-7 or AIM-120 on the fuselage corner stations, or would you have to be totally clean? What about the F-15E family variants that have been fitted with the F110-GE-129 or F100-PW-229? Is everything the same minus the need to hit the VMAX switch and overhaul the engines? Also could you reach the top Mach 2.5 speed with the conformal fuel tanks?

What was the need envisioned for the "emergency" VMAX button (and thus the Mach 2.5 top speed)?

Lampshade, max speeds with various payloads goes into tactics, and is thus classified.

[EDIT NOTE]

Ok folks, TC is checking back in after some time away. Upon looking through the boards I am responsible for, I found this Charlie Foxtrot thread.

I'll allow this thread to continue, but I've edited, deleted, or otherwise mod'ed about 5 pages worth of topic changes, arguments, things that were out of place, and otherwise, just plain Bravo Sierra.

Sorry I've been away folks, but I was a guest of Uncle Sam out in the sandbox for the past few months. Now, I'm back, and will do the best to resume my moderator duties.

I will reiterate that the purpose of this board is to discuss actual existing aircraft and/or mods that have actually been performed on these planes.

The fantasy "What if's" aren't a part of this board, and I think everyone would prefer that it be left to a Dale Brown fan discussion site. Fly safe!

TC

To answer a question that was a few posts back, that scenario where the Foxbat is making a dash for the border, and the Eagle is chasing it wouldn't really occur the way the question was presented.

1. If Blue can chase and lock onto Red with a Slammer, then that's what he will do.

2. If Blue cannot reasonably chase Red, then he will leave the engagement to someone who has a better chance of reaching Red.

3. Sometimes, Red gets away. It sucks, but it happens. I suggest you read about the air war in 'Nam, or about the Iraqi dash to the Iranian border in ODS. Some of those guys got away, and the IRIAF gained several new MiGs from that deal. The Ayatollah kept many of those as a "war debt repayment" from Iraq.

As for the Eagle v. Foxbat in combat? You might look up Rick "Clousseau" Tollini and Larry "Cherry" Pitts on 19 Jan 91. USAF Eagle drivers have downed Foxbats. Those guys got one a piece on the same mission!

It's good to be back guys! Cool
