I read a long time ago that the new MiGs are equipped with that but I have never had a chance of finding any photos that show it. Anybody happen to have a snapshot of how it looks like?

Compare the MiG-29SMT to the MiG-29A

Is that the same as the "fatback" configuration the "C" or later models have, or is that a true attached conformal tank?

I was always under the impression it was just an enlarged dorsal fuselage area on later models to expand internal capacity. The MiG-29SMT seems to look even bigger than the fatbacks though! Shocked

I think it is simply a larger back to the aircraft, not sure if it's 'removable' but does appear to be different shapes/sizes on different SMTs

Here is a MiG-29C and a view of another SMT with what appears to be no hump?

In the close up, it appears the 'tank' may attach and replace specific panels aft of the cockpit?

Thanks for those pictures. Now I finally get to see what it means as a "fat back".

Based on your last picture, I do think it's an attachment that requires removal of skin panels too. I recalled reading somewhere that it takes two hours to do up the configuration. Just that I just couldn't find pictures of it.

Yup, definitely different than the C version, or fatback configuration! Thanks for the newer pics TEG, and thanks to you ed.r.lee for sparking this insightful thread! Sure was nice seeing something new about MiG-29s that I wasn't aware of! Cool

Finally found it, it is indeed a strap-on tank.

It's a little pathetic that even with a strap-on and 3 external fuel tanks, the range is only 3,100km. A 4000km range will make the MiG-29 looks much more attractive considering the fuel cost.

Its designed as a short to medium range interceptor.
