A trio of planes were spoted in the Morrison/Sterling area of Illinois. A buddy of mine snapped a quick shot as they went by. Anyone want to fill in the info about what the red item is under the wing?
Thanks! |

| Looks like an ACMI pod or maybe a smokewinder. I've been out of the Viper business for a few years now though so not totally sure |

| Looks like some FMS equivalent of an AMA pod. It's not USAF. |

| So if it's not a [Link pending approval] plane, why would a trio of them be flying over the midwest? No air shows going on at the time. Any thoughts? |

Why does the image appear to be a photo of a TV screen? or a crop?
Being the holidays there isn't a reason those aircraft would be in the US. Nothing is scheduled, and there is limited base support anywhere.

| The first result on a Google search brings up UFO sightings by Blg. AF and someone in Illinois, therefore the Belgian AF is helping us hunt UFO's. |

You mean those F-16 sonic booms, afterburner flames, and flares that were tormenting Indiana? |

| Its a Royal Netherlands AF F-16-AM based at Springfield OH. Its common to see a orange dummy missille with a blue head on these planes. |

Yup - Dutch Viper and the orange item on the wing tip - not under the wing - is a dutch version of an AMA pod.
Cheers,
Henrik.
it's no dutch version.. its an AMD pod (carried by all). Its stamped right on it. You have the round nose or the pointy nose. Body is the same |
