I'm on leave for Christmas/New Years but I recently got a call from my flight chief telling me I had orders, of course being a 16 guy I immediately thought it was time for Korea round 2 but it turns out I got orders to Sheppard. I've always thought about putting an instructor package in a few years down the line (I've been in a little over 6). Does anyone know why I would get popped for orders even though I didn't submit a package over people that have been subitting packages for a while now. I have to get the specifics from work when I get back from leave but in the mean time, does anyone have any experiences or advice? Thanks!!!

I know they can non-volunteer people if they don't have enough volunteers. Maybe the volunteers they're getting aren't qualified either. Of course this also assumes you've never applied as I believe instructor duty is one of those ones they keep you on file forever.

Yes sir' I'm about 6 classes away from a bachelors...but still I don't see why that would make a difference.

I didnt think the CCAF was mandatory yet for instructor duty...a buddy of mine is about to PCA to MTF and he doesnt have his yet. I've never heard of anyone being 'tasked" for the duty but who knows, do the T-38's have civi maintainers? or are they military? You could be doing TA there? All I can say is if it is instructor duty and you got picked infront of others, let it be. I got orders back to Korea in front of quite a number of people where I'm at that have had their names on the list alot longer then I.

A CCAF degree is mandatory for instructor duty. You can start teaching without one, but you need to have it awarded within 1 year of completion of the Basic Instructor Course (BIC). You were probably selected because of your degree. Perhaps some of your peers did not have a CCAF degree or were not close to completing one.

Welcome to Sheppard SaulGood. T-38/T-6 and TA are civ contract. The only crew chief positions are Instuctors and possably Blue Ropes. I do remember years ago people being non vol for instuctor duty.

Yes you were selected because you already have your CCAF... If you get to teach the F-16 side then it will be a great time. If you teach the fundies side it will be one hell of a long 5 years. Good Luck you are going to need it...

Thanks for the input guys, I did some digging today and found out that it is most likely the CCAF that got me the orders. Anyhow, I'm pretty excited about it. Sucks really bad to leave such an awesome base with a kickass flying mission but it's time to move on. Yeah, I hope and pray I teach track because I'm a born and bred F-16 Crew Chief, I eat sleep and breathe it. Again, any stories or experiences you guys have on the subject are greatly appreciated, I've already gotten a few PMs about it. I've even sent my old instructor an email for some advice lol.

I just finished up a 4 year tour there teaching the F-16 course. After you get the details feel free to PM me. I'll fill you in on whatever you want to know about the job and the area.

The area sucks, the only reason the town exists, if you can call it existing, is because of the base. The jets are antiques that barely resemble anything in today's inventory... Did I miss anything?

The jets are old but they serve the purpose just fine. The most basic of APG duties hasn't changed much since this thing was first built. Refuel point is in the same place. The tires are still black and fluids are still in the same place. Remember that we're talking about a 3 level class!

The area has a lot to offer. You can make it suck though if your determined. Same is true for most anywhere.
