Hey everyone,
My nephew has an interest in joinging the AF after he finishes his AA this spring. I'm psyched that a good kid is looking to fill the ranks and am trying to give him as much info as possible.
He is going to speak to a recruiter but his father wanted input from me. Since I got out in 89 I'm sure some of the info is dated. Asking fro some info from memebrs to round out/confirm my info. Not real sure what his interests are - I would hate to tell him to be a crew-dog if he can't stand the smell of jet fuel:) (but I did tell him to crew on 16's).
Anyone been through BT lately? What has changed since 85? I also mentioned that he should select a career field by asking himself two questions: 1.) What would be the most enjoyable way to spend 4 years and possibly 20 if he decides to make it a career, 2.) What career field would provide him with a skill set that he can transfer to civilian life (i.e. medical, finance, technology, maintenance.
I know I'm kind of all over the board on this one so any and all input is welcome - thanks in advance. |

| Tell him to get his BS and then go AF...Nothing really negative can happen then. |

| Big future in unmanned systems. It sounds like the advice you've already given him is great. Make sure he thinks of several career fields he'd have an interest in. The AF doesn't have a huge need right now so recruiters might not be so helpful to someone that is fixated on one particular job. |

| Do not listen to the negative advice above with regard to aircraft maintenance jobs, 2X3XX jobs in particular are a great opportunity to work with some of the finest fighter aircraft the world has ever seen. I would also suggust that you check out the Air Force's newly updated official website. They list in detail exactly what new recruits will go through every step of the way through basic training, they even have videos and pictures for each week of the training so you can see first hand what goes on at Lackland. There is also videos and information for just about ever career field that is available in the Air Force today. The site is www.airforce.com, then up in the top right click on "explore opportunities", and there is tons of up to date info. Hope this helps! |

I was a Crew Chief on F-16s. Now work for Boeing making $80+K a year. ACFT MX is a good field.
You are already giving him great advice. Those two thoughts were dead on.
Viperkeeper had a real good idea. Get that BS and then go in. Those that were prior officer in the USAF and now working in my area make a whole lot more than me.
So far he's getting good advice. |
