Didn't Brazil already commit to buy the Rafale though?

It does make a lot of sense. The Rafale and Super Hornet are superb aircraft, but bigger and more complete than what they're used it. The Gripen could replace not only the Mirages, but also the F-5s and AMXs as well as well a the possibility of a naval version replacing the Marina's A-4s. Depending on the contract, Embrarer produced Gripens could also be sold to south American neighbors.

Brazil has already sealed multi-Billion dollars defence deals with France
including Eurocopters,Subs and transfer of nuclear sub technology..
They are not under any obligation to buy the RAFALE.
If the military insists on Gripen, president LULA wouldn't have much options.

You could see a situation though where they order a handful of Rafale's for FX-2 and then Gripen to replace AMX/F-5.
