From what I understand the USAF wanted to replace its HH-60 Pavehawks with a aircraft similar to the Army's MH-47G. As an AF bird it'd be called the HH-47 (Pavehook?). Now the GAO got involved and said the Chinook is too load and the program has since been canceled. Anyone knows what the USAF plans to do now?
Initially I saw this as a bonus not only for the USAF, but also the Army. The USAF could transfer the Pavehawks to the Army either serving as attrition replacements or allowing each Combat Aviation Brigade to have a Spec Ops Aviation Platoon or Company. Or the birds could go to the 160th SOAR and plus them up a good bit. A plus for the USAF would be that a H-47 supply chain exists as well as training and an assembly line that's already open. USAF would also be able to send their pilots to Fort Rucker and have the Army train them instead of create their own school and waste airframes on instruction instead of mission. USAF already trains chopper pilots their anyways, so not much would change. Does this plan make to much sense for the government?
