For those of us who are in love with the F-16, if you have not done so, read "Touching History" by Lynn Spencer. It's the untold story of the drama in the skies over America on 9/11.
I just finished reading it and found it to be a real page turner.
I have read in the forums several mentions of this book, but not a seperate topic.
If anyone who was at any of the F-16 bases reads this topic, I would love to hear your stories about that day. |

| The morning of 9/11,I reported to duty in Civil Service Technician status. It was a typical monday morning. I prepared F-16C,83-1150 for a training flight over New England. Ironically we had 10 aircraft including 83-1150 wing tanks installed and flight tested. Our unit was scheduled to go to Hawaii on a training mission. Needless to say that trip would be temporarily cancelled due to events the morning of 9/11. I launched my aircraft on spot 1. Walked into the Crew Chief room and saw events unfolding on TV. Brian Gumbal reporting a small plane hit one of the WTC towers. Shortly thereafter we heard our 1st go training flights were returing quickly. Proceded to recover my aircraft. While doing my postflight weapons trailers rolled onto the flightline from the bomb dump. Loading munitions proceded. Pilots walked back onto the flightline. My pilot stated we've been placed on active duty. I later found out I was placed on active duty the morning of 9/11. We received orders to provide Caps over New York City. Our first jet rolled out of the pods 84-1392 the early afternoon of 9/11. We worked 13 day straight 12 hr shifts until traditional Guardsman were scheduled to support tyhe mission. |

I had mentioned this book previously in other topics and there is another periodicals that come to mind.. the Lockheed Martin Code One Magazine issue..January 2002 - Vol. 17, No. 1 has stories on both coasts of F-16 operations on 9-11.
Flawless Execution is a modivation book authored by Murphy the founder of Afterburner Inc which comprises of Fighter Pilots that go out and lecture to corporations. In the book he mentions one of his fellow pilots stuck at the Burlington, VT airport during 9-11. I believe he was a CA ANG F-16 pilot and after making some calls he took a taxi to the VT ANG side of the airport and was "drafted" to fly for the VT ANG as alot of ANG pilots could not make it to their duty stations. He never flew with any of the VT ANG pilots but was able to intergrate seamlessly with the VT ANG.
In Touching History - I would of liked to have gotten more about how the F-15s of the Hawaii ANG were busy intercepting all the jets coming into Honolulu. |

I just saw a cool painting "9-11" by Gil Cohen. It is a C model so it must either be Richmond or Andrews as the ND birds were ADFs.
