OL is correct...it's a canned training scenario, and judging by some comm miss-speaks from #2 he is fairly inexperienced which probably means they’re just trying to show him some sight pictures. Per the threat rep, it is also pretty likely that the F-16 is a “mil-power only” bandit, which takes away the Viper's best game plan vs. the Hog...going vertical

Makes sense … Hog driver probably wouldn’t want to burst the gun too much shooting upwards as well!

That looks like Arizona landscape to me near Davis Monthan where the A-10 FTU is. As confirmed by others, OL called it right describing it as a canned setup. That was the (D)ACM ride in the A-10 FTU syllabus, which focused primarily on comm, mutual support and contracts. I remember flying that ride back in 02. The F-16 (in my case and this case) was entirely a training aid flying a specific profile to achieve learning objectives.

As a student then, I remember how easy it was to get shots on the Viper (as a training aid). Later on in my career, while CMR, I had the chance to do (D)ACM with Vipers and a much different bandit showed up that day.

The A-10 is not an air to air platform and we never claim that it is. However, it does have some strengths. If those strengths are honored and suppressed, the A-10 is in trouble. If not, more than a few pointy nose types have been surprised and humbled with some lessons learned.

True … this is my favorite Hog strength, bringing our warriors home after some heat!
I don’t think anything new will do this, and hopefully they won’t have to!

I concur with the Pima county landscape.

First picture is priceless!

Thanks for the link VarkVet. I have never seen those pics....made me smile. That and its CSAR/CAS strengths for our people on the ground are my favorite as well.

Cheers....Bandito

Probably like trying to fight with baseball bats, one guy on foot (A-10) one guy on a motorcycle (F-16). If the motorcycle tries to slow down, circle me, all while trying to swing he's in trouble. If he uses his speed to extend out then turn around and come back fast at me then I'm in trouble.

Put a gun in an X-31 and you wouldn't stand a chance. Cool

Our pilots at Hahn in the 80's were very proud to point out that an A-10 got a F-15 in Red Flag. After much trash talk, the final version was the F-15 tried to come from up top and in 6 o'clock on the A10. The A10 driver spotted the F-15, opened his brakes, and the F-15 flew past him. They said there was got quite a bit of film of the rear end of the F-15!!!
