Now I'm confused on how one becomes an astronaut. Are you an astronaut when they 'hire' you into the program or are you an astronaut if you've flown above a certain altitude? I've always thought it was the latter.

The common definition seems to be that a person becomes an astronaut once they start their official astronaut training. Common/layman definitions, professional definitions, militaries, and national definitions often differ. Wink

The dividing line between atmosphere and space is typically much more muddy.

As much as I hate to Mod forums that aren't my responsibility, it's time to jump in and call knock it off, knock it off, knock it off.

Sextus, bad on you for opening up a can of worms that you knew was simply going to cause trouble. It's clear to me that starting a fight was your only intent with this thread. If you'd legitimately had a question on this topic, you would've interviewed an official source, like the Air Force Personnel Center to ask your questions, and/or air out your grievances. Please do not use this site to ask questions of a racial or sexual manner. It is unprofessional, completely off topic from the intent of this site, and your questions are designed to make the users uncomfortable.

It's time to lock this one up, and forget about it.

To answer the astronaut question, one is called "astronaut" when one completes the training and is in line for flight selection. Until then you are called an astronaut-candidate (for PR purposes however NASA often drops the "candidate" label when astronaut-candidate's are sent as guest speakers).

To wear the wings of an astronaut requires flying above 50 miles/300,000 feet. Some X-15 pilots earned this right, but were never really called astronauts.
