Kinda surprised to find this hasn't been asked yet... at least, in my searches...
Anyway, I've been curious, ever since I got the opportunity to touch an F-16, what on earth that material is! Maybe it was paint I felt, but it seemed like something other than just aluminum underneath it. And I'd read somewhere that it was carbon-fiber-something-or-other.
Just sheer curiosity! And, okay, maybe I'll use this information to further my obsession by looking for things made out of said material. |

Depends on where you touched it?
If you say you touched the paint, then you felt paint. It is very hard to tell if there is carbon-fiber, or fiberglass, or aluminum honeycomb under the paint when you simply touch it.
I'd say off the top of my head about 78.4% chance it was aluminum.
(See graphic below; Ref: T.O. 00-105E-9 - http://0x4d.net/files/AF1/R11%20Segment%2011.pdf)
There are other 'treatments' given to the paint (or just under it) in places to help reduce it's RCS, there is also special considerations for leading edges, rub-areas, etc that help reduce wear.
Anyone here a 'paint guy'?
Keep 'em flyin'

Wow, that's an impressively detailed graphic!! Thanks! That'll put things in a little different light as I look through my collection now...
Looks like I was, in fact, just feeling aluminum. Definitely didn't feel like a pop can though. I say it felt more living than that. Then again... I may just be insane.
