I was watching an interesting program-mig-15 Air War over Korea" on Military Channel this past Monday and an interesting point brought to my intention:

The program host said f-86's well known kill ratio of 8:1 was an exaggeration because it didn't take into account of the many handicaps faced by the Russian and Chinese pilots(ie., the Russian pilots were instructed to maintain radio silence among themselves since their involvement was supposed to be a "hush-hush" operation that would have political repercussion if exposed). He also went on to say that according to the Russians, if only their experienced pilots were included in the combat records, the kill ratio would be 2:1, in favor of the mig.

From what I understand, the earlier sabers(from A to E) were inferior to the mig in terms of performance but the F model that came on line during 1953 was supposed to be very evenly matched with the mig.

Any insights as to how well the saber fared, especially with the "honchos" flying the mig? "

It mostly seemed to lay completely in the experience of the pilots. America had a large stockpile of veterans in aerial combat compared to the North Korean and Chinese pilots. Seriously, they had nothing to go on except Russian training back then. Russian "volunteers" or possible East German ones made for a whole different type of adversary for certain. Dad was with the first Sabre guys there and got to see some of the results. Cannons back then may have been slower, but they sure packed an awful punch when they were on target! Lucky for us we had better fire control systems, training, and tactics- otherwise it would have been a WHOLE different ballgame.
