I found this article posted on the Ares Defense Blog (in one of their random posts of links), and I thought it was rather interesting/hilariously untrue.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sponsored/russianow/6453948/Russia-Now-Interview-with-Mikhail-Simonov---the-inventor-of-the-Sukhoi-jet-fighters.html
Quote:
Mikhail Simonov, designer of the iconic fighter jets Su-27 and Su-30, has been at the forefront of aircraft design for more than 50 years. To celebrate his 80th birthday this month, we hear from the man who gave Russia the edge in aerial combat.
...
It is often said that the Su-27 and Su-30 are the best, but they have not been used in a single war. So how could their superiority be proved?
“That is, of course, a secret,” smiles Simonov.
...
The Su-30MKI is considered an unbeatable fighting machine. This has been borne out in air battles with potential adversaries. The first time it was done was in the early Nineties, when Su-27 pilots were invited to take part in military training with the F-15.

The are the best! The best manned FSATs for Slammer ops checks that is. And they put on a pretty good airshow routine too, I guess.
You're never gonna have a lack of Sukoi fanboys and fangirls that say their jet's the best. Same can be said for fans of the Eagle, Viper, Raptor, Hornet, et al. Just grin and don't give it no nevermind. We know who's right.... |

Hey, I consider myself to be something of a Flanker fanboy myself! However, I realize that even the best of the breed is notably inferior to the F-22.

I wonder why India is bothering with the FGFA program, then? |

| According to the propaganda spreaders at Suckhoi the Flankers can beat anything including the F-22, which makes you wonder what the PAK-FA Turkey is for... |

For the american 6th generation fighter
But to be honest not even the russians seriously believe that the Flanker beats the Raptor. Look every manufacturer presents his product in the best possible light and makes exeggerated claims about it. The Russians are no exception, but it is somewhat amusing that people accuse the russians for propaganda, but swallow all the marketing crap from their own industry as gospel truth. |

I agree Scorpion, and it always amuses me when anyone says that "Aircraft X" can beat "Aircraft Y". Nothing is further from the truth, and I don't give a d@mn what you're flying.
TACTICS is what wins an engagement, not the aircraft type. Anyone who tells you differently is full of Sierra. Granted, that has its limitations. A Sopwith Camel is not going to beat a Flanker, but the right Eagle or Viper driver is going to beat a lesser trained or prepared Flanker driver...or, vice versa.
Also remember, that sometimes, your best tactic is to break the engagement, or, not engage at all. Discretion is one of the best tactics you have in your bag of clues.
We've said it many times, and I'll say it again: It's the man, not the machine. |
