| Are those bad guys MiG-29s or Su-27s? They look a little closer to MiG-29s to me. |

They're MiGs Adrian.
Another interesting bit: note the Fulcrums are in afterburners, yet the Raptors are not?
Ahhh...art imitating life.

No, the rear facing radar was marketing nonsense that never happened. |

What was the sting for, then? a RWR? |

I have no idea but it was clear it was never going to happen, happen as in put a rear facing radar in there. Probably was a drag chute housing or something else rather mundane. |

that's for the dragchute. Antennas are just outboard of the engines. |

| I declare that I've read that at least some variants of the Flanker have already had a radar implemented in the sting. Perhaps not the Su-27, but maybe the Su-30 or Su-35 have. Unfortunately, the Sukhoi homepage wasn't working the last time I tried it, so I haven't been able to find an official source to support the idea. |

I'm not sure i'd believe a word those Sukhoi people say. We've all read their nonsense claims that the Su-27 family of jets is capable of dealing wiht F-22s and we've all witnessed the ongoing disaster that is the PAK-FA program. They might, and I say might have trialed one or two jets with rear facing radar but than again who's going to take their word at face value? I sure can't.
To sum it up: To much nonsense stories from Sukhoi in the past with, as always with Sukhoi there no way of proving anything.
They could claim to have built Firefox and some people would swallow it down (I do not mean you don't gewt me wrong) and brag about what Russia has achieved. |

Claims about aircraft combat performance seems a bit different than claims about the equipment that the plane carries. The first is projection or speculation whereas the second should be an objective yes/no. If Sukhoi says their plane has a radar in the sting, why not believe them? It's not like it's some revolutionary new technology. If you can put an aperture in the nose, I don't see why you can't put one in the tail, too. It's not like they're saying that the sting contains a photon torpedo launcher.
If Sukhoi's word isn't good enough, perhaps some crew chiefs/mechanics that work on Flankers could confirm or deny it? I don't think there are any posting on this board, are there? |
