Ogden, UT (AHN) - A military jet was forced to drop its fuel tanks and two unarmed bombs during a routine flight late Thursday, causing an explosion in a remote part of the Hill Air Force Base in Utah.
According to the Standard-Examiner, problems upon take-off forced an F-16 pilot to follow emergency landing procedures. No one was injured and the pilot safely maneuvered the aircraft back to the ground, but an explosion caused a power outage in the base.
ABC 4 reports that the pilot jettisoned two external fuel tanks and two 500-pound bombs before landing, following protocol under such situations. The munitions were released in an uninhabited area of the base, but one of them exploded and destroyed a shed.
The Explosive Ordinance Disposal at the base is working to recover the other bomb.

F-16 had a IFE and punched his tanks over the base with that the 2 MK-82's came off.

Yeah, that's what I thought, VarkVet. Last time I checked, concrete doesn't explode.

So not dummy bombs? Still, one shouldn't have gone off, unless armed. Sure to be an inquiry as to why it went off.

Yeah it sounds like the Mk 82,s were live. The tanks were said to be safe but one of the 82's blew up a shack and cut off power to parts of the base (because it detonated near a powerline). The second 82 didnt detonate and the EOD team was still deciding what to do about it. They might blow it up in place.

Hey, condoms are 99.99% effective and unarmed Mk-82's are 99.99% inert.
I'm always sorting and seperating my ammo, throwing the rounds into bins, bags and cans. I fully expect one of these days to have a round hit something juuuust right and BANG.

usaf f-16 bombs its own air base. 8(
actually, this reminds me of when I played the computer game Strike Commander and its add-on Tac Ops 1, by Origin, the game maker famous for its Ultima series of phantasy RPGs. in the flight sim Strike Commander, the protagonist was a merc who led a squadron of F-16s.
as I played falcon 3.0 and its add-ons (F/A-18, FS-X, and MiG-29) for IIRC about two years, before I played Strike Commander, mud-moving in Strike Commander was easy, IMO; and in the end, I achieved more ground kills than air kills in Strike Commander: not because the AI wingmen shot down more bandits than me, but because we collectively shot down as many bandits as in-range and on-screen, and I blew up more ground targets than the lot of wingmen.
the trick here was: when the protagonist RTB, blowing up the buildings at the home base counted as ground kills. thus, when I RTB, and had any unexpended free cannon ammo or cheap iron bombs, I expended them on said buildings. 8D
I once made a screen cap of this sierra hotel screen, so I could brag about it to friends, but of course I lost this screen cap, aeons ago.

Makes you kinda' think...
Read your auto insurance policy, especial the part that doesn't cover "falling or forced landing of aircraft or parts of aircraft"
Keep 'em flyin'

[Airplanes are] near perfect, all they lack is the ability to forgive.
