Great news for the family
http://www.defenselink.mil/releases/rel ... seid=12862
The Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) has positively identified remains recovered in Iraq as those of Captain Michael Scott Speicher. Captain Speicher was shot down flying a combat mission in an F/A-18 Hornet over west-central Iraq on January 17th, 1991 during Operation Desert Storm |

Fox is reporting that the Navy has confirmed remains found in Al Anbar province recently are those of Navy Lt. Scott Speicher. His family has presumably been notified.
The unconfirmed back story is that Bedouins found the crash site and buried the remains a short distance away. Marines were approached by a local who knew of two other Iraqi civilians who led them to the site.
Finally some closure for his family.
Janitors: Didn't know where to put this so move it to a correct location as appropriate. |

May he rest in peace. Godspeed.
Hopefully this will give the family some closure. At least the family now knows that he is not suffering anymore. |

I almost did the same thing because I overlooked this thread because of the nonspecific title. Thanks mods for changing the title of the thread to include his name Captain Michael "Scott" Speicher. |

Was he promoted to Captain posthumously? All the pics I've seen of him has him wearing Navy LT bars (USAF Capt. equivalent). Just curious. |

I remember that night very well … We were at the Lik and didn’t go that night … Our sh*t was loaded (F-111E) but we didn’t go! Hell we were loaded a day after the Aug 02 invasion! I so happened to be there for a WTD!
That man went and paid the ultimate sacrifice for this country.
ALL …PLEASE REMEMBER THAT! AND NOW HE IS COMING HOME! |

| He was promoted twice during his time listed as "missing in action" which follows military protocol. Rest in peace Captain. |

I'm glad that he has been found. I hate it that it had to be this way, and that it took over 18 years, but I'm glad that his family now has the answers they have been looking for. 18 1/2 years of no word, very little evidence leading to any sort of conclusion, and no funeral, is way too long.
RIP, Sir. Welcome Home. |
