I dragged my feet while I was active about getting my A&P and every base I was at seemed to offer (offbase) a 2 week crash course resulting in taking the exams and getting the A&P certs.

Unfortunately, in the good ol' boy state of Alaska, to get an A&P I must attend the one and only school for close to 2 years and that is taking 11 years crew chief experience and transferring it. yea, right.

So I'm looking at what is down in the lower 48, if anyone has information. It'll be cheaper and easier to fly down and stay in a hotel for 2 weeks somewhere.

Thanks in advance!
Joe

There are a couple of places, two that pop into my head, I had friends go there and do it, One is in Dallas, the other in San Diego. Once I talk to them I can get the exact names of the places, it cost about 1500.00 But you have to already have you test tickets from the FAA.

Question is do you have your test tickets?

Several FSDO's will not take 623's as proof.

I did mine at Fort Rucker when I was at Eglin. Two days for prep. One day for testing. Cost about 500.00 dollars for everything. But that was back in the 90s.

What you need to do is call around to all of the prep schools. Tell them what you have. And they will let you know which FSDO to visit. They know the ones who are tight and they ones who are not with the slips.

I ended up going to Atlanta to get mine. The guy was ex Air Force and understood what training I had. The FAA guy at Mobile Alabama. Told me to go to school for two years. Because my 12 years of Air Force Flight line training and experience was worthless.

When I got mine (back in '92), the wing DCM could sign off on your FAA forms to allow you to take the tests.

I bought the "study guides" and passed the tests, then I went down to the "local" airport (North Las Vegas) and did my practical. My practical took two days because the guy had me change an engine on a Cessna 172, I think that was the work he was supposed to do that week-end...

Here's what you'll need:

You don't need to pay a school, you can do it all yourself.....

Oddly enough when I went to get my slips, the guy in Atlanta FAA office told me I had no usefull experience. Guess it's all who you talk to. Still no license, and not getting it anytime soon.

Cutlass, Call all of the Prep classes. And tell them you want to spend your money with them. But you just need the slips. They will let you know where to go.

Also just a heads up. Ive had my A/P for almost 17 years. How many times have I used it?

Zero

Unless you doing annuals out of the trunk of your car. You will work off of your companies repair staion license.

The DOD contractors I worked for wanted A/P guys because it was in the contract. And shows that you have a basic understanding of aircraft maintenance.

Or for a avionics guy like me its just resume eye candy.

I've been lucky enough to find mil contracts to work, and civil service for a time. Never really needed the A&P. My short time on civilian aircraft taught me to stay clear of anything the FAA oversees.

Georgia Aviation Technical College in Eastman, Georgia is where I got mine. It's 10 days of eat, sleep, study, test. It really sucked and the instructor was a hard@ss, but it's well worth it. GAVTC is definately not a diploma factory. I got permissive TDY, did it in 10 days, and even got a student discount at a local hotel. I'd be happy to help if you still need it:
