My point is, will the F-35 (or F-22 for that matter) meet their mission requirements (that are set TODAY) 40 years from now? My answer is no, and I dare say that's more than an opinion. That's almost a matter of course. Will the F-35 and F-22 be outstanding a/c still capable of flying against certain threats in 40 years? Absolutely. But will they meet their original MISSION REQUIREMENTS of being able to penetrate a hard and layered IADS on the first day of a war? 40 years from now? I don't think so.
Unless of course the remaining future F-35/22 force will be more ordnance launch pad (e.g. systems truck), than actual self-escorting platform penetrator?
Sort of like how a JASSM-ER, JSOW-ER, or Long-range AIM (etc) armed F-16 in 2018+, e.g., could perform similar requirements (albeit, via different means employed) as to say those of ODS era.
