Defying a White House veto threat, the Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday authorized the Pentagon to buy seven more F-22 fighter jets at a cost of $1.75 billion. The 13-11 vote was just one setback for the administration, which is attempting to rein in defense costs. The panel also ordered nine additional F/A-18 fighters that the White House had axed in its budget request, along with an alternative engine for the F-35 the administration did not want.
