American Airline engine fire, result of "shell out"
Good thing it was not airborne, this would have been very bad...

Would this be a good reason to do these sorts of things on a test stand? |

| Perhaps. But maybe they needed to see how the thing was gonna perform when mated to the jet it was gonna go back into service with? There may also be FADEC tests not available on the test stand that can only be done with the motor installed on the pylon. (speculation) |

No they were doing a high power run after in in flight rollback. The last picture showing the disk stuck through the starboard engine's cowling, it was the engine on the port side that failed, that disk went through the bottom of the fuselage.
As Meathook says, lucky this did not happen in flight, a US Air engine did the same thing a few years ago.
From the industry inside view there are a lot of issues involved with this failure, it is not a simple matl. failure. |
