No, The one we had for SAC was just a long buzz like a dryer going off or a hockey game scoreboard buzzer, accompanied by a voice over the loudspeaker saying, "KLAXON, KLAXON, KLAXON!!" "REPORT TO AIRCRAFT!!" |

Hey Meathook,
I wish I could say I dont remember that date, but, I too had to live the nightmare. was a Very green A1c. on his first assignment at Pease AFB. (got Sacrasized right out of the chute), It was my second day on alert. HORN BLOWS... runout to the Acft. (FB-111) crew mounts up and blows the cart, smoke fills the shelter. I looked up at cockpit and crew is frantically pointing at his helmet (we launched comfree) I run and hook up com, Pilots says(and I qoute) "We got a go chief". I just dont know how to respond to that, so he tells me again.
Our job, in case of an actual alert launch, was to report to the "nearest" running tanker and board her. so my only response was "are the keys in the truck sir?" he shook his head yes. we wished each other a nice(however brief) life and i stepped and marshalled him out of the shelter. But, i just stood there, watching as he tavied out onto the runway. i just stood there watching as he powered up and lit both candles. about the time he lit both engines off, they throttled down and taxied back in... First (and last) time i ever hugged a strange man. i flew up the ladder and hugged that mans neck as though he himself had recalled those acft. I got his gear and crawled down the ladder and fell to my knees. (aircrew physically carried me to the truck)
During debrief, we were told several Soviets subs had parked themselves "somewhere" off the coastline and snap shot several missles at us. Come to find out. (not true at all, thank the good lord) it would have been just under 4 min. to impact had it been true.
And yes darkvarkguy they did say the word "Klaxon" 3 times, along iwth the horn blarring for all it was worth. |
