...and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?
Okay, but seriously now...
When an airplane crashes, are any of the parts recovered and recycled into other aircraft? Not that the wing of a crashed F-16 would be grafted onto a new F-16, of course (that would be quite a bit too risky...). I was thinking that maybe some of the metal in the airframe would be melted down and used to help construct new airframes or other aircraft parts.
Or maybe make tin cans. |

| I was always told that NOTHING from a crashed aircraft could be reused in another aircraft but that may be Crew Chief superstition and not actual fact. |

| do planes have any kind of self-destruct mechanism [AFTER the pilot pulls handles] to keep the tech from falling into enemy hands? |

In a way, certain "sensitive systems" in the Viper that I will not name used to be automatically sanitized upon ejection. Dunno how it was done nor if it's still in use. |

| When the F-117 was shot down over Serbia, the Air Force were planning to airstrike the wreckage but decided against it (or more likely told they couldn't) due to political implications. |

My Dad told me about an F-86 that went down and crashlanded relatively intact during Korea. It was surrounded by Chinese soldiers and a napalm strike was called down on it to keep it out of their hands. Don't know if the pilot was still with it(didn't want to ask either). The Russians got one from the North Koreans though that pancaked in the mud along a river or the coast. I think it was 319, the one that Bruce Hinton got the first MiG kill in and Jabara made ace in as well. I think it is in one of my books somewhere, perhaps the Squadron "In Action" series.
I seriously need to get back into my reading again, too many good books are going untouched here. |
