Well Sukhoi says it is designed as a counter part to the F-22 in a recent interview.
That's rather amusing, infact very amusing if true for I thought according to Sukhoi over the previous years they have claimed souped up Flanker varients to be F-22 killer, yet they needed to design a new fighter which quote will be a "counter part to the F-22 " so I guess the Flanker marketing was nonsense afterall (not that many of us didn't know that of course). Hillarious. |

It indeed was. The russians couldn't come up with something compareable to the F-22 or F-35 and will have to bridge the gap with another upgraded Flanker. The russians also claim their SAMs are stealth killers. So what are you doing, if you can't compete for the moment? Right you simply claim that what you have is good enough.
Much like the americans claimed the F-35 wouldn't be sufficient enough in the AA role as long as the USAF hoped to receive more Raptors, suddenly the F-35 is the end of all. |

You can read the same details in Jane's Aero Engines. The AL-41F is an AL-31F core with a new low spool.
Jet engine technology requires decades of investment to advance the state of the art. The Russians simply haven't made that investment, and even if they finally sorted out their financial disarray and started investing now, they would still have more than twenty years of catching up to do.
You guys are marvelous
In 1982-1992 the Soviet Union invested tremendous amount of money into AL-41 - billions of the old rubles (i won't tell exact number to not scare the lawmakers). While working, we've accumulated so much experience in aerodynamics, metallurgy, methodics, automatics... also, it was the first [indigenous] FADEC-type.
Later we used that experience to modernize the old AL-31F and made the "117". By simply using those exploratory studies, we've raised the thrust by 20% [12.5->15 tons] to the same weight...
117S will be on the market while we'll making a 5-gen engine.

An anonymous official seems to be hinting that the FGFA will be able to supercruise at mach 2. Well, that's what I'm assuming he meant when he said that it could fly at that speed "without consumption of huge amounts of aviation fuel". It's being developed by Sukhoi, just as PAK FA is. Or is FGFA a variant of PAK FA? I'm unclear on this... |
