I can venture a guess that European emissions laws (like Japan's) are higher standard than the current US regs.

My professor said in one class that the reason you don't see many Big Three cars over in Japan is because their strict emissions standards on top of the added price of the steering wheel being on the wrong side can potentially send the pricetag higher than Cheech and Chong combined (my words not his)

Your professor needs to get a new job, because he sucks at the one he has! Rolling Eyes GM and Ford both manufacture LOTS of cars with the steering wheel on the right and they both have LOTS of vehicles which meet PZEV Exclamation Where do you go to school and how much did you spend on that education, can you get a refund? Poke Next time you're in class don't forget to bring your brain Very Happy

PS I couldn't resist, nothing personal ptplauthor...

My Professor's been studying East Asia (Japan, China, and Korea) for 30 years. Japan's import restrictions are tighter than Spandex on Rosie O'Donnell.

And it's not just the emissions--safety, and other BS play factors--Dr. Patterson just pointed out the emissions as one factor. And the tuition at the college is about $30K a year, so Razz . I'm not going there fulltime, I don't know where I want to go to college anyway. Need to save up some $$$ before I enroll anywhere.

(However, I got a grant from the High School I went to to attend this class.)

No offense, tank, just clarifying.

And "PT" is fine--it was supposed to be capitalized, but I forgot... Doh

If that is Dr. Wayne Patterson, he has quite the resume. I think the real reason we don't export more cars to Japan is because of the BS! It's mostly little things like how a country requires a wiring harness to be grounded or a type of fuel pump. In the case with Japan I would tend to think it is tons of little things just to make it to difficult to compete in their backyard. I have worked on bids for public utilities, they put them out for public bid, but once you get to page 403 of the bid requirements you find there is only one vehicle that actually fits the bid. The whole thing is a sham, this is the same thing country's do with things imported to control; the domestic market. America is just to nice and tries to make it easy on other country's, which sucks for the domestics. The whole thing is BS.

It is and he does (20 Books)--if I had the chance to, I'd love to take more of his classes, alas, I'm desperate to get out of my mom's house--and De Pere won't cut it--still within shouting range.

Japan's government is in bed with their corporations like our 42nd POTUS was in bed with interns (am I being too hard on the guy?? Nah...).

However that is the way Japan has been for a long time--government and industry in league with one-another. It has turned Japan into a powerhouse, however, to the point that we might need to wake Matthew C. Perry up for another trip across the Pacific--though that started a slippery road that IMO we're still feeling the repercussions to this day.
