Can someone explain to me why the latest Navy "Weasel" only carries 2 HARM missiles? All of the Air Force Weasels over the years from the Hun to the F16 have carried 2 HARMS as standard armament. It seems to me that when you are now spending a 100 million dollars for an aircraft that only gets 2 shots at the bad guys thats a big waste of money and machine.

Weasels don't usually go it alone, more than just two shots are available, usually. The tactics using just two HARMS per jet are fairly effective at keeping the site down for the suppression roll and a lot more DEAD (Destruction of Enemy Air Defenses) takes place now using other weapons.
By the way, the Navy named the EF-18G the "Growler", not "Prowler". I'd figure you'd talk more about the name.... |

| The Growler's taking over for the Prowler's standoff/escort jammer first and foremost it's not supposed to be a Weasel. IIRC, the Prowler didn't have more than two HARMs either. With all the ALQ-99 systems loaded up, there's not much space left for CBUs to take out the sites--better to have another plane do that. |

Some source for two HARMs?
I would guess it can carry the same six(?) as E/F.
Prowler could carry zero HARMs or any other weapons with three ALQ-99s and two bags of gas while Growler can carry three ALQ-99s and two bags of gas PLUS two AGM-88s and two AIM-120s.
Growlers main weapon is anyway RF radiation as already mentioned. |

I'm going off of Tom Clancy's Carrier book. I would venture a guess that if all they needed was an escort jammer they wouldn't load up with a full set of -99s. the rest would be gas, but I don't know if all the Prowler's points are plumbed, and then they might as well put a couple of HARMs on the points that can't be plumbed just in case they come across a Straight Flush.
As for the loadout of the Growler, I'm just guessing that it will be able to carry at least what the Prowler could. |
