OK, I was thinking of that Brian Griffin, and I do recall the episode now, but still, it's nothing like my story. I won't be ripping anything else off.

The reason why I opened up this thread is because I watched the 1998 WWII movie Saving Private Ryan, where Pvt. James Francis Ryan (Matt Damon) is withdrawn from combat after being notified that his two elder brothers were KIA, so I wondered if that was the case in reality where you are withdrawn from combat because at least one of your immediate family members, e.g. your dad, brother or sister is KIA. |

| You would be pulled from combat, but obviously notification would be much easier these days. Can we move on now? |

Sorry but I may not be following quite the same conversation/context as you are. I don't mean notification of other family members that are in service; what I mean is notification of civilian family members. I don't know exactly how it's done because the policy seem to change and sometimes there are extenuating circumstances.
Quote:
Maupin's parents were notified earlier Sunday when a three-star general visited them and gave them the news, they said.
In the case of wounded soldiers, sometimes the wounded soldiers notify the family before the family receives official notification.
Quote:
McCray learned of the incident on Sunday, when her son called her: "He sounded pretty shook up. But I was happy to get a phone call instead of a knock on the door. I got to talk to him first."
She later received a call from the U.S. Department of the Army, which she said has been phenomenal in supporting her and making sure the family has everything it needs.

3. If a family member was killed in combat, you would be removed from your deployment
That's the basic plot of "Saving Private Ryan"
