I had an idea, but I'm not sure that it would be suited to the tastes of this board or not. Therefore, I'm creating this thread for the discussion of the idea instead of jumping the gun and creating topics about it that might get little or no serious interest.

So here's the heart of the discussion: We set up a "tournament" of sorts where we pit certain fighter aircraft against one-another. A thread is created for each match-up (such as Typhoon vs. MiG-35, F-35 vs. Su-35BM, etc.) and a poll is set up in each thread. In addition to voting for the aircraft that you think would win, discussion and debate about the face-off in question would also take place. After some certain, pre-determined number of days, the fighter with the most votes in the poll will be declared the "winner" of the fight and will advance to the next tier where it will face-off against the winner of an adjacent match-up.

Here's a hypothetical example of this process: In the Typhoon vs. MiG-35 thread, a period of 10 days (just as an example) passes and the poll is checked. There are 14 votes for the Typhoon and 12 votes for the MiG-35. Therefore, the Typhoon is declared the winner and advanced to fight the F-35 (which subsequently defeated the Su-35BM).

If this is to be done, some method of deciding which aircraft will take part in the tournament should be done (possibly by voting). We will also need to decide how many fighters take part in this tournament (8? 12? 16?). Also needed to be decided are the terms of engagement (BVR vs. WVR, number of aircraft in each squadron, payload type, presence or absence of AWACS support, etc.). Whether or not the ROE changes from one battle to the next will also be necessary to decide.

Personally, I want the tournament to be about the most cutting-edge fighters in production (F-22, Typhoon, Su-30, etc.) and even the proposed fighters which may soon enter production (F-35, MiG-35, Su-35BM, etc.).

If discussion of these advanced fighters brings up concerns about possible OPSEC, then the tournament can instead be about older, obsolete aircraft. Even the propellor-driven fighters of WWII may be a good theme for the tournament.

So how does this sound? Is it a good idea or is it a bit to juvenile for the likes of this board?

Feel free to discuss any possible problems or issues that this may bring up.

I thought that's why we had the "Vs." threads already. Personally, I'm thumbs down.

Most of these deal with posts based mostly on opinion, and very little fact.

Fanboys inflate the totals for their favorite, with little basis for a true argument for or against.

Plus, these usually lead to flame wars, which inevitably leads to more work for your faithful staff of moderators.
