If there's a heat source, the Sidewinder will find it. Has anyone else ever done the cigarette lighter trick when the 'winders aren't capped?

1. Are those caps made of foam rubber?

This one's brushing close to the line, but:
2. I know "white ones" are live warshots, and "blue ones" are inert, but does it matter how much of the weapon is blue--like do some painted blue still have a live motor?

The attack helicopter, armed with Stingers, Sidewinders and cannon, hovering above the deck would serve as a useful airborne AAA platform and could pose a threat to any slow or fast mover in the vicinity.

It could aim its weapons at an approaching enemy plane and fire its cannon when it overshoots.

The Army has Avenger for anti-air, freeing up the Apaches to go play tankbuster.
Put it this way, any credible air force has jets armed with A2A missiles with more than a twenty-mile range. AFAIK, that's beyond even the AIM-9X's range. Besides, using a helicopter like that wastes gas.

You honestly think an enemy fighter pilot isn't going to see an attack helicopter on the deck, and say, "oh, he's shooting at me, I've got missiles, but I'll let him blow me out of the sky."?

We've answered one question about A2A Helicopters, and the response was it's not good for the chopper, now you're asking basically the SAME thing again. Did you honestly think the responses would be terribly different?

PT, I've been in bigger wastes of gas than that several times. Let's not try to infuse any logic into this discussion. Laughing

Skyhigh, without discussing tactics, it's nowhere near as cut and dried as you'd think. Yeah, the chopper winning a dogfight looks good in Hollywood, but the fighter has a much better advantage than the chopper, in that it can extend the fight to where the chopper can't. It has a much better AA radar than the chopper, can launch its ordnance from a longer distance, and has much more AA ordnance than the chopper.

Then again, if Nic Cage is flying that Apache, whoa boy! Watch out! Laughing

True, I guess that's why they call the C-5 FRED.

Sky, I'm with TC....if you want to learn how this stuff gets done, take some time to understand the capabilities of an airframe. You'll never see a Loach pulling the same strikes as an Apache--even though they're both armed choppers, they're two totally different systems.

Better yet, wait until you see your local bookstore or your favorite Viper-related website (yes, I'm sure he'd be honored to have it sold here Very Happy ) selling a certain book using the name of an ocean twice.....the writer's doing some good research, so's I've heard, and everything in there's going to be vetted by each of the services.....
