Anything by the Swiss film maker Lionel Charlet! Vols Blancs and Ice Hornet are both great. Downside is...they are only available in DVD coded for Region 1 (PAL = Europe). If you're in the US, you'll need a region free DVD player or use your computer.

"Nova Battle of the X Planes" would be one, you can purchase it at http://www.amazon.com/NOVA-Battle-X-Planes-Liev-Schreiber/dp/B00008YLV1/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1238297191&sr=8-2 or you can stream it over a high speed internet connection http://www.hulu.com/watch/23356/nova-battle-of-the-x-planes
I'd also recommend "Speed & Angels"http://www.amazon.com/Speed-Angels-w-game-n/dp/B001B187CU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1238297760&sr=1-1 which comes bundled with a copy of Warbirds the online video game from totalsims.com/ And if you can find a copy "YF-23 Black Widow II Declassified" from (formally) http://www.wci-productions.com does a nice background story on the YF-22 Raptor's competitor.

Not all of them are fighters, but I liked the Wings of the Red Star, I wish I could find the whole series and that they'd made more of the show.

Iron Eagle

LMAO

How on Earth can a movie with F-4s (The World's Leading Distributor of MiG Parts) playing MiGs compare to a documentary like Speed & Angels?

TOP GUN has more of a documentary feel--yeah their "MiGs" weren't MiGs either, but at least they weren't the most notorious MiG killers in existence, and the plot was slightly more realistic.

Though I've only seen Iron Eagle once, I never want to see that movie again. There's little to learn from that movie.

Folks, this thread might get slightly messy, hide the kids.....

Hey Hey Hey, dammit! I didn't say anything about Iron Eagle 2! The MiGs in IE1 were Kfirs. Laughing

Either way. they both weren't as realistic as Top Gun, the Box Office receipts will prove it--that and look at how many people cite Top Gun as the reason they became pilots.

Top Gun was so successful, they didn't NEED a second, or a third, or a fourth attempt to get it right. Face it, they Foxtrotted the making of that entire franchise--if they would have redid the script of the first one to please the USAF, they probably would have gotten a superior product than Top Gun.

And on top of that--Top Gun has a better theme--Harold Faltermayer and Steve Stevens made a musical masterpiece--Danger Zone is overrated.

Don't you talk about Kenn Loggins that way! He's the godfather of 80s movie soundtracks! Laughing

3 songs from Caddyshack, 1 from Caddshack II, 2 from Footloose, 2 from Top Gun, and 1 from Over the Top...The greatest Arm Wrestling movie EVER MADE!

I'm thinking that during the 80s, movie producers were probably in their meetings talking about the new flick.

"Ok, so we need to get a soundtrack together."

"Is Loggins available?"

I like Loggins's music, but Danger Zone has been played so much when it comes to the F-14 that it lost a lot of its appeal to me.

I love the gopher dance--we do the dance at the local hockey games--team's the Gamblers and we have a gopher for a mascot, W....T.....F!?

At least you didn't bring up Stevens' power-mullet--I'm a fan of the hairstyle, I used to have one up until a few months ago....what can I say, I was born in the wrong decade.

I'll over look Steve's mullet, because he's Billy Idol's guitarist. You with a mullet?...Not so much. Laughing

In all seriousness, "The Magic of Flight" was a really good film. Focuses mainly on The Blue Angels, but they are fighters. Also has some great shots filmed on the carrier deck. Looks best in IMAX.

There's an IMAX film entitled "Fighter Pilot - Operation Red Flag", about an F-15 driver from Mountain Home. Pretty good apart from some goofy CGI and general hollywoodizations of air combat.

If you're a maintainer or zippersuit you'll probably be rolling your eyes a lot, but it's still a decent flick. It's available on Hulu.

You can get the DVDs to "Dogfights" (very cool show) on the history channel website.

Iron Eagle does not even compare to Top Gun. Top Gun was awesome in that cheesy, testosterone-charged guy-movie sense. The plot of Iron Eagle is foxtrotting hilarious: what? of COURSE an 18 year can hijack, and fly, a fighter, better than both his father and his wingman! what do you mean you DONT BELIEVE IT?!

dude would be toast before he managed to close the canopy

Dogfights was a great show, I like shopping on Amazon.com better http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw_7_9?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=dogfights+history+channel&sprefix=Dogfights but to each his own.Wink

Iron Eagle was okay, but the sound track doesn't compare, and yeah the plot was definitely nuts (don't forget his teenage backup group getting the F-16 fueled and armed for an overseas flight)! Best part of Iron Eagle was the Falcons dogfighting against the Israel Kfir's. Except for the part, for the main bad guy coming back to dogfight (did I mention the plot was stupid)! Rolling Eyes

I just got seasons 1 & 2 for a total $50 on Hist Channel

I also have to laugh at "final approach." While not about fighters, it fits into the kids-are-better-pilots-than-adults genre: A plane gets hijacked, and of course the passengers all trust the 10 year old kid to land the plane - but its okay because he's an EXPERT on his computer game. ....right....
