Two coalition aircraft were directed to visually identify the unmanned aerial vehicle after it was detected hovering inside the Iraqi border. The pilots confirmed that it wasn't a coalition aircraft and that no collateral damage would result from a shoot-down. Coalition air forces tracked the UAV for more than an hour before the pilots engaged it, officials said.

Called it!

The Israel Delta Viper that shot down the UAV over Gaza (?) carries a kill marking to mark its achievement.

Lebanon, actually. Iran exported a couple of Ababil UAV's to Hezbollah, and Israeli F-16's shot 3 down. This is the same type of UAV we shot down in Iraq. Apparently it can also function as a guided missile. It can be equipped with a 90kg warhead and then remotely piloted into a target.

so the one article said it was recovered and in pretty good shape.. guessing it was a 20mm kill then? a 120 would destroyed it

F-16 shot down Iranian drone in February

By Michael Hoffman - Staff writer

The Iranian unmanned aircraft downed by coalition forces last month in Iraqi airspace was shot down by an American F-16, according to an Air Force officer familiar with the operation who asked to remain anonymous.

Coalition Air Forces tracked the Iranian drone for 70 minutes after it entered Iraqi airspace Feb. 25 before shooting it down 60 miles northeast of Baghdad, said 1st Lt. John A. Brimley, a spokesman at Multi-National Forces-Iraq, in a statement.

Maj. Gen. Abdul Aziz Mohammed Jassim, head of military operations at the Iraqi Defense Ministry, told Reuters the Iranians likely made a “mistake” flying the drone six miles inside Iraq, but a U.S. statement said the aircraft’s presence over Iraqi airspace “was not an accident.”

Two pilots in the area confirmed it didn’t belong to coalition forces, Brimley said. The drone was an Ababil-3 reconnaissance unmanned aircraft, he said.

It was shot down only after it was determined there was no risk of collateral damage, Brimley said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

It was a Stinger which missed the MiG (yes US built AA missiles miss too). Mavericks were never cleared for MQ-1 so I guess your logic is flawed.

Evening all,

I am a member of the F-16 squadron that engaged this UAV and shot it down and have personal knowledge of how it was brought down-20mm. The weapon engagement zone and other parameters of that mission I will not openly discuss here, but the 20mm gun was the appropriate weapon of choice for this intercept.

f-16ordnance is correct. It was a gun kill.

I've heard that the Sparrow would be better-suited for splashing high-value targets such as AWACS and IFR. It's not like a warhead twice the weight of the Slammer is a disadvantage...

Interesting........so they think a SARH missile (AIM-7) consigned to the rubbish bin of history by the US is better on account of its warhead size?

Pretty sure the AIM-120 would do enough damage.......(AWACS is a converted airliner usually) and be better in pretty much every other single way - more agile, versatile, less draggy, fits in bays, F-16 carries 6 of them...

If you want a big warhead without the **** SARH surely the AIM-154C is for you....

The Sea Sparrow has always been the sea going cousin of the AIM-7.

True, at least until the ESSM. They did resemble the original Sparrow. Now they are more like AMRAAM than Sea Sparrow. Very little at that, too.
