Is the rank of Colonel (O-6) or the naval equivalent, Captain (O-6) the highest rank for servicewomen in the armed forces? Many conceptions hold this fact possible.
What are your opinions? |

USAF Lt. Gen. Terry Gabreski is a woman, as was USN RADM(LH) Grace M. Hopper. Hopper pinned on Commodore in 1983. NASA Astronaut, and USAF BGen Susan Helms is another notable female General Officer.
Women were authorized General/Flag Officer ranks in 1967, however, the first two women, Anna Mae Hays, and Elizabeth P. Hoisington pinned on Brigadier General in 1970.
Seriously, could you imagine the $h!t show that would come about in this day and age if women were not allowed to progress in rank as their male counterparts? This would be like the days of the Buffalo Soldiers, the Tuskegee Airmen, and the 442nd RCT.
The only things women are still barred from doing in the US Military are ground combat (i.e., Infantry and Special Forces), and Submarine service. I can't think of anything else they presently can not do. |

| Grace Hopper in 1985 was the first. She was promoted to Commodore USN in 1985 by special presidential appointment. This rank was renamed Rear Admiral Lower Half in 1986. |

Two things there Hoss: 1) It was 1983. She retired for the third and final time in 86. 2) I don't know if she was the first female Flag Officer, but she definitely was not the first female officer to pin on a star. Refer to my previous post. |

Too Funny.........
I worked for Gabreski when she was the USAFE/LG. She is a great lady to work for, just a little vertically challanged. |

Yes, she is an excellent officer, and I do hope that not being a flyer won't affect her getting the 4th star she deserves.
I also recall her being built not unlike an Oompa Loompa.
BTW, Gen. Jumper was the same way. Me being nearly 5'11", I dwarfed him! |

I've heard of her when I was in, but never seen or met her in person. I've heard she is a good person and supports those who are under her. Like TC, I hope she will get to pin on the 4th star.

Speaking of short or "vertically challenged", the Wolf when I was at the Kun was then Colonel Huge Cameron (Brig Gen ret).

I first met him either during my 1st or 2nd exercise there at CDOC. I thought it was a kid approaching me at first. After he left, a buddy of mine remarked, "Proof that the AF promotes short pilots." |

So in the USAF, there is no more glass ceiling with regards to the promotion of servicewomen above Colonel / Navy Captain (grade O-6)?
I wonder why?
Because the majority of military forces across the world do not have servicewomen ranked above Colonel / Navy Captain, i.e. have flag ranks. |

Because they can do the job! And, FYI, there hasn't been a military "glass ceiling" since well before many of the folks on this site were even born!
The first woman 4 star just recently pinned on, however, women have been generals and admirals since the Vietnam War.
Again, could you imagine the sh!t show that would come down in this day and age if women were kept from holding General and Flag Officer rank? |
