Anybody heard of the new Eurocopter Heavy Transport Helicopter?
It is supposed to carry 40 tonnes as a gross take-off weight, 20 more than the Russian Mi-26, and can carry 70 troops, the -26 could carry from 80 to 150.
It has a range of 1,200km the -26 goes to 1,900km with auxillary fuel tanks.
The question is why would the westerners want a chopper like that, Eurocoter itself stated that demand on it in Europe won't be sufficient to start the programme, but the staes has a requirement, is that true?
Russia needs the -26 because it is fighting in very bad grounds were no proper airstrips are available for large transporters to land, so the tank carrying -26 is important for the russians, why would the Americans want a similar thing? and if they really want it, why didn't they do it from the first place?make an aircraft similar to the Mi-26? |

| Same things I wondered when New Zealands government announced it would buy them. I think upgraded blackhawks would be better for us and what is wrong with the chinnock. |

We've always had that requirement and we already have two helos, the H-47 and the H-53E. The 53 is going to be remanufactured with new avionics, new blades and stronger engines which will make it faster, higher payload and more maneuverable than it already is. |
