Two f-16 fighters create a panic in Flanders

"To intercept a civilian plane, the fighters breached the wall of sound. (...) Ghet Police received Tuesday a lot of phone call from people worrying after the shockwave provoked by two F-16 fighters breaching the wall of sound. These were on interception mission of a civil plane. (...) No important damage [to [Link pending approval]] was reported.

The two concerned planes are based at Florennes. They received order to intercept a civilian plane that had no more contact with air traffic controllers, explained Defense spokeswoman Ingrid Baeck. This case is always considered as a possible threat. But it wasn't and contact was (re) established with this civil plane over the North Sea, explained Belgian Defense. Communication cut was due to a misunderstanding on radio frequencies to use. The plane pursued its planned flight in a normal way. A similar case already happened two years ago over [Link pending approval];

The British plane was on it’s way from Germany to the UK, and when entering Belgian airspace the crew changed his radiofrequency used by the French ATC in stead of the Belgian ATC.
According to the Belgian newspaper “Het Nieuwsblad” the British plane isn’t a civilian one but belongs to the British military. On the website www.mil.be the Belgian Military states it was a civilian one.
Also the breach of the sound-barrier found place at an altitude of 37.000 ft. Belgian Air Component F-16’s are only allowed to fly at speeds of Mach 1 or higher at a minimum altitude of 36.000 ft.

In Bruges, a city in the province of West-Flanders, the ceiling of a store came down as a result of the double sonic bang. They plan to claim the costs of the damage back from the Belgian Defence Ministry.

A spokesman of the Defence Ministry said that they would not change the way they handle these threats. Within 12 minutes after the QRA received the alarm the suspicious airplane was intercepted, so the pilots did what was expected from them. The intercept however took place above the North Sea, but with a country as small as ours, it’s almost impossible to intercept a relatively fast aircraft (800 km/h) within our own airspace.

I’ll let you all know when I hear more about it.

So if the intercept happened "over the North Sea", why was the target not handed off to the Dutch? Or does Belgian airspace extend into the North Sea? Looked at an atlas and it didn't appear to be the case. Maybe I'm wrong, tho.

Maybe because the plane was tracked by Belgian authorities first? And don't forget that Belgian and Dutch Air Forces cooperate very closely: there must be agreements for such [Link pending approval]

Belgian airspace does extend into the North Sea. Our coastline is only 65 km long, but hey, we have a beach and all that.

You think a pair of Vipers at altitude scare people, then just imagine what a pair of Korean F-4s at 10K' trucking along at 1.4 will do. But hey, at least the dude intercepted got a good callsign out of it.

Yeesh...reminds me of the excitement we had a couple of years ago here at Lackland where a "sonic boom" during airshow practice was blamed for several instances of property damage:http://www.kens5.com/news/local/Air-show-sonic-boom-causes-ceiling-cave-in-near-Lackland-106798928.html. I heard it and don't think it was a true sonic boom; nothing as dramatic as the legendary supersonic F-105 flyby Smile

I do not understan what was the reason to don't start going buster until the sea and then move to a supersonic envelope. I think flying at 0.95 or 0.97 is faster then any transport or civil aircraft.
