even if its systems were identical to the F-4, kinematically the F-15 held tremendous advantages. Hmm, this thread has left me with much to think about, thank you all for your time.

Doofers, doofusses, TWS, SAR, etal

Good frigggin' grief, TC. C'mon, man, get with the acronyms, huh? I am disappointed, and losing faith with ya..

The tern "doofer" came about from the Seymour Johnson Double Ugly troops way back. It was the thingamabob that the doofusses screwed around with. See?

We were all new to the SLUF and the thing had so many gizmos and such, that we started calling a lot of of them "doofers". For example, when aiming in the HUD [Head Up Display], we would tell the student to move the doofer over to the ubahunk, then hit the 'designate' button. Frankly, we were having trouble trying to keep track of all the "gizmos" and display symbols and acronyms.

++++++++++++++++++++++++

When checking out in the Northrop Tigershark and MACAIR Bug in eighty-four, they called their scanning radar RWS, or Range While Search.

As with the Slammer, the Phoenix had its own active radar, so no need to "illuminate" for the missile seeker. The Tomcat still had to tell it where to start looking, and it may have had a datalink like the Slammer to help it when mid-course. Any Tomcat pukes here? Fill us in.

Historical note: Second generation Viper implemented a Situational Awareness mode for the dar. It would stop and paint a tgt for a second, get the data, then start sweeping again. It was not a real TWS, but you could get the neat tgt data box displayed on the REO [Radar Electro-Optical display] for several tgts.

Gums sends ..

P.S. Hey, TC, SAR also stands for Synthetic Aperture Radar. I can see that we on this site need a glossary for all to reference. Whatchya think, Janitors? I would think bird-cranium should take this on.

Very good idea Gums, and I do think that is something we should keep Parrot-cranium busy with!

Yeah, I've been slacking with my terminology. That's what happens when you spend 4 years away from pointy-noses, and then spend a couple of years on top of that in the giant tubes. One of these days, like Eddie Money sings, I wanna go back...

I think that's what Val Kilmer said.
