Hello everyone, I was a F-16 crew chief from 2002-2006 at Luke and also worked at MD Helicopters in Mesa AZ. I was laid off in Jan 2010 and I am thinking about going to Iraq to fix UH-1N(Huey). I was wondering if anyone has been there as a mechanic and what there experience [Link pending approval] have a friend that works for Northrop and says its pretty good over there but thats with Northrop. Can anyone tell me about the living conditions. Is there internet? What type of danger is there besides the critters? What can I expect? Any information would be great.
By the way I have a daughter and wife I would be leaving behind. |

Working in the Middle East is always a sacrifice. If you need the money bad enough. Go for it.
There are plenty of jobs here. Edwards is always hiring. Federal jobs and Contractors. We cant get ARTS to stay here. And the pay is 65 to 85K. Also DCMA is hiring.
Plenty of places to go.

| I am willing to make the sacrifice and i need the money but i would like to know about living conditions(tents or trailers), communication back to the states(telephone and internet), safety(would i need to fly with the helicopter?, would i need to leave the base for any reason?, are there any attacks at the bases?) I would like to hear about someones personal experience or what they have heard from a friend about working there as a mechanic. |

Everything depends on where you go. In Irag And Afghanistan. Most places are regular buildings. But if you go to some smaller places. It maybe the mobile trailers.
No reason to go off base. And every one should have phones and Internet.
The recruiter will let you know before you go. Just remember. The worse the conditions. Ask for more money. If you go someplace with LBFMs and Beer. You wont get paid as much. |
