I hate these stupid names for heavies. It's always the "Spirit of" then followed by some horrible cheesy buzzword. What happened to the old days of girls, guns and drinking as the basis for nose art?

You call that nose art. No where near! AMC has gone down the route of civilian carriers by naming there jets.. Wink

Lil' Patches was my Dad's B-52G back in '91.

Story goes, this as the image the Wing King's wife objected over that got them toned down.

In complete agreement with you Elliboom!

Some of my particular "favorites" Rolling Eyes

"Spirit of the Military Family" (Starts with 'G' and rhymes with 'May')

"Spirit of North Charleston" (Nice! You just named a bird after the 9th most violent city in the United States!)

"Spirit of Strom Thurmond" (The most OVERTLY racist politician in the history of Washington D.C.)

"City of Altus" ($h!thole city and base. 'nuff said)

"Spirit of Total Force" (Fetching for a name there, were we?)

"Spirit of Connecticut" (I have no idea here...This should've been a B-2 name)

"Spirit of the Choctaw Warrior" (Wow! Really? You wanna watch what I can pull out of MY @$$?)

***********************************************************

BTW, the bird that landed gear up at Bagram was 96-0008 "Spirit of the Air Force".

***********************************************************

Some good names, however:

"Spirit of John Lee Levitow"

"...Col. Joe M. Jackson"

"...Bob Hope"

"...The Purple Heart"

"...Ronald Reagan"

"...Go For Broke" (Hickam bird. Named after the motto of the 442nd RCT)

"...Constitution" (Dover bird)

"...Golden Gate" (Travis bird)

"...America's POW's and MIA's" (Charleston bird)

"...Wright Brothers"

"...Tuskeege Airmen" (The first C-17 I ever flew on!)

"...Thomas B. McGuire" (One of the leading U.S. aces and CMH recipient...KIA, WWII)

"...P-51" (Tuskeege Airmen's sister ship. This particular aircraft, 98-0051, was selected to receive the name, because it was actually
C-17, USAF purchase code P51.)

Here's the boom receptacle that Elliboom always wishes he could've seen...F-105D #62-4364 "Pussy Galore II".

I liked "Stone Age Mutant Ninja Tanker" on a KC-135 back in Desert Storm. IIRC it even kept the nose art to the bone yard.

Because naming somethin' like a C-5 "Deep Throat" while having it appear on the USAF's public website just wouldn't be cricket! Wink Very Happy

I prefer the C-5's other name, "FRED".

F#ckin' Ridiculous Economic Disaster

BTW, the C-5 being "FRED" was what inspired one of the C-17's nicknames, "Barney"...as in FRED's short, fat friend. Wink

TC I love that picture, we joked about doing that to an F-4 just before they went to DM, but never would have had the stones to pull it off.

Because those were the good ol' days where men can be men. Now, this world has created a viewpoint and culture where it wouldn't be "PC" to do so. Heaven for bid we "offend" anyone anymore.
